When the Boss Invades Facebook - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Top 3 Things To Do When Your Boss Finds You in Facebook Donât panic. Itâs just a little invite from your boss. But seriously, what would you do if your boss were to find you in Facebook and sent a request to be your friend? Now, your boss will see your photos in the last party youâve attended. Donât forget that awful rant slash shout-out you posted on your wall when the boss asked you to revise the Word document five times! It seems like a tricky situation but there are actually three things that you could do when this happens. Make a decision! To add or not to add? That is the question. If you add your boss as your friend in Facebook, he/she will have access to most of your personal stuff: your rants and raves in the shout out box, photos, videos, and even messages from friends. If you chose to reject his/her request, it could jeopardize your relationship with your boss. You actually have two options to this dilemma: one, is to add him/her as a friend but limit their access to your profile. two, let your boss know that youâre not comfortable mixing your personal life with your professional life. Option two seems to be quite difficult to do based on my personality. So I donât think I will ever have the guts to tell my boss that. But we have to admit that it solves the problem quite easily. So at this point, the best route is option number one. This can be pretty tedious on your part but youâll soon find that it has some benefits, too. Read on to find out. {I am not sure how this is suppose to read i f this is suppose to be something you have written you are the boss so that last sentence does not make sense your call} Do an audit and draw the line If you chose to add your boss as a friend in Facebook and you think that there are some portions that you didnât want to share, then you have to do an audit. What do you want him/her to see? What are things you donât want them to see? Are you feeling like a member of the Board of Film Censors already? This is actually very easy and fun. All you have to do is log on to Facebook, go to Settings, click on Privacy Settings, amend your limited profile list and specify your limited content. And voila, you can now choose what he/she can or cannot see. Based on experience, the most viewed portions of a Facebook profile are the Photos page and the Wall. You may experiment and limit as you please. Another way of limiting people in having access to your profile is by creating a group with different levels of privacy settings. By forming a group, you can share common things not only with your boss but also with the other people in your friends list. These are just some of t he ways to keep workplace connections in Facebook without letting them totally intrude your personal life. Always keep in mind that you donât have to share everything with everyone. Use it wisely With the increasing popularity of social media networks, itâs already becoming a permanent part of the workplace. However, there are some things that we can learn from this. One of which is how we can use these social networking sites wisely. Honestly, if I wanted to connect with my boss professionally, Iâd rather add her in LinkedIn than in Facebook. She doesnât really need to know about my frequent trips to the beach or how much I hate the hideous gladiator boots in the mall. Iâd rather use Facebook for my personal relationships rather than professional. But of course, if I were placed in the unavoidable situation, then Iâll try my best to get to know my boss and see how I can better work with her. Based on what you know about your boss, how can I connect with her? What kind of personality does she have and how can this help me work with her better. Believe me, no employee wishes to have a hard time dealing with his or her boss. Thanks to the internet, we now have a means to get to know our bosses. But a word of caution, do not get too personal. Remember that you are a professional and must remain professional. Consider being too personal as your danger zone. Focus on how you two can work professionally given the personal information you have access to. No matter which social network weâre on, we always have to remember that what we put up is actually a mirror of who we are. We have to remember our personal brand and the people who see us (whether in person or via the internet). Donât get me wrong, itâs not about putting up a fake show or being pretentious. Think of it this way, wouldnât it be nice if we could share parts of our lives with other people and at the same time we add value to theirs in a beneficial and tasteful way? Instead, focus on your personal brand. Are your photos and comments aligned with your personal brand? Does it communicate the kind of person you are at work? Also, by connecting with your boss via Facebook strengthen your relationship with him/her? How can you add value to them through this channel? Itâs nice to ponder on these questions before posting anything thatâs for online public consumption because it will help you decide which posts are OK and not OK for workmates to see. Facebook and the other social networking websites are just one of the numerous ways to build relationships. But itâs not always as simple as that. People and situations can make some money moments more than a little awkward, and you are left feeling all sorts of emotions. Here are eight of those occasions weâd all prefer to be stricken from the workplace. 1. Contributing to Gifts for People You Donât Like Itâs fair to say, wherever you work, there will be people you like, and people you donât. There will also be the usual birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, and layoffs. Thatâs when Janice from accounting pops around with a collection tub and asks for money to buy a gift. You are faced with the dilemma â" do you chip in and say nothing, or refuse and look like a real villain? Itâs hard to come out and say, âNah, not putting money in, I hate that guy.â You can try and act poor, or claim you donât have any money on you. However, thatâs usually met with, âNo worries, Iâll put $10 in for you, pay me back later.â Perhaps the only option you have left is to just avoid the collection using ninja-like skills. 2. Splitting the Check on a Pricey Night Out The boss decides that after-work drinks are going to happen, and everyone is invited. But this is not a company-sponsored event, despite the fact that people are ordering food and drinks like everything is âon the boss.â After an evening of revelry, the check comes, and thatâs when most people say itâs easier to just split the check equally among everyone. Great. Except John and Jane were knocking back $15 cocktails all night, and you were taking advantage of the 2-for-1 well drinks. So you tell everyone you want the check split based on what everyone had, making you about as popular as a cold sore⦠especially with your server. Asking for a Raise Youâve been doing your homework on your salary, and realize you are being underpaid. Whether itâs by a little, or a lot, the next move is not easy. Itâs time to have that awkward conversation with the boss, and you know it will not be easy. If there have been layoffs recently, it makes it even harder. Maybe youâll be met with the old âyouâre lucky you still have a job!â retort. Whatever has happened though, if you are doing the work and should be getting paid more, you deserve the money. 4. Calling in a Loan You Gave to a Coworker It may only be $20, but itâs been months since you forked over the cash for a coworker in need. A sad realization has dawned on you. Either they totally forgot about the money you loaned them, or they are hoping you have forgotten about it, and are doing nothing to remind you. Itâs time to get your money back. From the furtive glances in the office kitchen, to steering the conversations back to money, nothing is working. You have to come out and ask â" which somehow makes you look like a tightwad who cares only about money. Saying No When Someone Asks to Borrow Money If you donât want to get into the situation outlined above, you can simply say no when someone asks for money. But itâs not as easy as that, is it? Itâs hard enough to pluck up the courage to ask a coworker for money, but that person is almost always going to be greeted with a âSure, how much do you need?â in reply. Now, you have to drop the hammer and say no. But what good reason do you have? If itâs a significant amount of money, then declining based on that is not a problem. But if itâs $10â"$50, and you feel sure youâll have a horrible time trying to get it back, what do you do? Saying âSorry, Iâd like to, but I donât trust you to ever pay that backâ is not going to give you the best reputation in the office. This could be a great time to suddenly make an urgent call, and hope he or she never comes back and asks again. 6. Watching in Horror as Your Card Is Declined Itâs been a fun lunch. The server comes back to the table with a mountain of receipts for people to sign. Well, except you. They have to whisper in your ear âIâm sorry⦠this card was declined.â Aaaarrgghhhhhh! If you could grow a shell and crawl inside it, you would. It may be a technical error, or it could be that the card was canceled due to a fraud alert, but it doesnât really matter right now. All you know is that a bunch of coworkers are looking at you with a mixture of pity and confusion on their collective faces. Will rumors surface that youâre having money problems? Will people start offering to pay for things because they know youâre having a hard time? Eek, thereâs no way to come out of this one without a perma-cringe on your face. Saying No to a Charity Collection Coworkers may be actively involved in fundraising for charities, or may even know someone who benefited from that charity. But letâs face it, if we all contributed to every charity, weâd go broke. Whatâs more, you may simply not agree with giving money to some charities, and thatâs your right. However, the fact of the matter is, when you say no to a charity collection, you are instantly seen as some kind of Scrooge figure who hoards money and hates the poor, the sick, and the disabled. And what if you say no, but then go out later to the office happy hour and drop a bunch of money on drinks? Your best bet here is to make up an excellent excuse (you gave money already to the charity last week), or offer support in another way. Your time, your skills, or something non-monetary. 8. Finding Out What People Earn There is a reason most companies keep salary information a secret. It can lead to a lot of griping, demands for raises, or even job losses and people quitting. So when you find out what someone else in the company makes, it can really lead to some stunningly awkward moments. They may make way less than you assumed, and your reaction can make them feel awful. âReally⦠youâre only earning that? Wow!â On the other hand, you could think theyâre overpaid, especially if they do the job you do, but for more money. And then thereâs the moment people discover what you earn. If you earn more than they expected, you can get daggers shooting at you. They expect you to pick up the check at lunch. They feel like you owe them. If itâs less, suddenly youâre pitied. Or laughed at for taking such a low salary. In any of these situations, red faces, long silences, and hasty exits are the norm.
